Yeah the cryptocurrency people really ruined the word crypto and I think returning it to its original true definition would be best. It is really hard to stop something once it becomes a trendy buzzword though.

Can we establish "crypto" to mean "cryptography" again?

I prefer to distance from the terminology at all. There is no "again" because the word was not used heavily in Bitcoin until the last 4 or 5 years. Crypto is terminology that serves to muddy the water and nothing more.
