I went to buy cat food today and it was out of stock everywhere online. The manufacturers website said they were facing supply shortages. https://snimgs.s3.amazonaws.com/IMG_2066.jpeg

not sure about how to do this for catfood, but the shortage prompted me to learn how to make at-home dog food. fairly easy actually:

  1. boil chicken with gizzard, heart, liver
  2. boil brown rice + throw in a few veggies (carrots, spinach, etc)
  3. combine and food process to rough meal texture
  4. separate into mini baggies and freeze

i'm sure this is healthier than some sort of preservative filled industrial pet food with infinite shelf life.....

You must love your dog a lot. I'm unfortunately too lazy - I even have one of those automatic pet feeders. The best I do by my cat is find the best dry kibble I can which is grain-free, starch-free, and high in animal protein ... Plus my cat is indoor-outdoor so she occasionally catches fresh food.

The second Tweet in that thread is where the 20 to 50% increase is shared:

MORE - According to information from the Funke Mediengruppe, #Aldi expects food purchase prices to rise by 20 to 50 percent over the next few weeks.

Using Google Translate:

The reason for the increase: the higher prices that Aldi has to pay its suppliers. "Since the beginning of the Ukraine war, there have been jumps in purchase prices that we have not experienced before,"
This is also due to the fact that feed, fertilizer and energy have become more expensive.
Aldi had already increased the prices for around 160 items two weeks ago, and a week later another 20 items became more expensive. Competitors followed suit. Due to the situation on the world markets, "increasing sales prices in the entire industry (...) cannot always be avoided",

Here's a ZeroHedge article on this:

With rumors of shortages swirling around, however, supermarket owners have been complaining of the sort of panic-buying not seen since the first months of pandemic.
German supermarkets have even started limiting the purchase of cooking oils and flour in particular to prevent a mad rush to stock up on items that customers believe will run out.
