Students are being punished for writing properly, as their teachers think they are using generative AI.

Now, they are starting to write worse just to not get flagged as an AI.

Is it fair that teachers prohibit students using AI, but then use it themselves?

And, shouldn't AI be considered a tool, like a calculator? Once you learn the basics, the calculator becomes a tool. AI is the same.

I'm a college professor and I'm strongly on the side of letting them use it as a tool.

The problem is not AI use, the problem is when it's used as a substitute for thinking. To combat that, you need to redesign how you assess your students.
