We just heard back from the conference organizers. Our paper was not selected. There were 100 papers submitted and only 15 were selected.
Sad, but the outcome is not really surprising. If you don't know the organizers and the organizers don't know you, it's an uphill battle to be accepted into any conference. This is the first year they're running it, so they probably already had a number of names in mind, and the real selection among outsiders was probably much less than 15.
On the plus side, I'll be presenting this paper for the first time, later today, at an internal department seminar. I'll post whatever feedback I get on SN tomorrow.
The plan after that is to continue submitting it to various conferences and improving the work over time. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Note: This is a series in which I am publicly documenting the research process for an academic study into financial micro-incentives on discussion platforms, using data from Stacker.News. See here for a list of updates.
Awesome!
Never give up 🦾
Thanks! I'm optimistic that this paper can get some interest in other conferences. But something working against me is that the prestige level of my university is weak. A lot of people will see my affiliation and write it off without reading carefully. I'm cool with where I'm at (wrote about it here), but sometimes you get reminded why clout really matters.
Clout is attainable through networking, or just doing things your way.
Sincerely, an anon highschool dropout.
Boy don't I know it. Unfortunately (for me) it's the least enjoyable part of my job, and I don't do it nearly enough.
That I am certainly doing. Not sure how well it's working out tho haha
I'm not big on networking events. When it's for-purpose I feel it's bs. But nearly every conference I go to is mostly boring and then I just run into people that feel the same and we hang. This is awesome networking and I know tons of people that way that I talk to often.
I'm sure you'll be fine!
Their loss
Yeah, I genuinely think it would've made for a lively discussion. They haven't released the list of accepted papers yet. I'll be interested in seeing what were the accepted ones.
I'm guessing yours was quite unique.
They only allowed the submission of a 500 word abstract, and I kinda wished that I could've submitted the whole paper. I wonder if I should have just done that, i.e. send the PDF draft as an attachment along with the 500 word abstract.
Sorry about not getting selected. 15 out of 100 is tough odds.
Good luck today with the presentation!
Thanks! Will let everyone know how it goes.
