  1. other zappers zapping too late and learning that there is no point to zap unless you're the first in new.

what else am I supposed to do with CCs though?

I don't comment [let alone post] quickly enough to spend the amount I do get.

I guess I could coalesce my zapping into fewer, larger, zaps, and bias towards only zapping sufficiently new items; however that'd mean I'd forego zapping most of the items that I liked.

Ideally? Just zap content that is valuable to you. Same with your sats. Someone writes something nice, be decent and zap them. No gamifications required for showing appreciation for content.

The problem is that for the zaps to carry signal and be a meaningful indicator of quality content during discovery, all these additional subsystems like sybil fees have been introduced. And rewards because no one likes 9% tax, and then boosts, and then downzapping, and so on and so on.

All I'm saying is that if the purpose of rewards are a discount to zappers, then every zapper should be rewarded equally. But that's not the case, as zaps are rewarded through artificial inequality. It's a discount to some zappers, which I believe is where Darth is coming from in the comparison to state subsidy.

In the end, those ignorant to the gaming of the system are paying a 9% tax to the benefit of a few that could be.

(edit: changed to 9% because that's the effective rate on zaps, the other 21% is actual tax)

In the end, those ignorant to the gaming of the system are paying a 30% tax to the benefit of a few that could be.

I currently think of it as the cost of having the comments that have already been sorted by the zapping efforts of those who do chase rewards.

Perhaps the onboarding or even the frontpage could make it more obvious how to participate in the race.

Does "the race" strengthen or weaken the signal carried by posts ranked by zaps on the front page?

posts that are already zapranked high on the frontpage are the result of the "race", which is comprised of early zaps from people who deliberately sort by new, or maybe see posts and comments earlier because they subscribed to the poster.

I'm still not familiar enough with all the various incentives and behaviors to have any confident opinion about the best way to encourage new folks to join this tactical zapping race. There is some value in learning it organically; after all, it would be really dumb if onboarding ended up turning the zap mechanism into a rewards-chasing casino.

seems quite harmless, as far as trolling goes.

turning the zap mechanism into a rewards-chasing casino.

Is already from long time ago.
Rewards pool must be eliminated.

According to k00b, very few zaps are meaningfully early.

Do you mainly sort by Lit or New?

You can boost your posts with CCs

I usually leave it on LIT because I'm a little loathe to bet on rewards; I do realise it is part of the SN incentive model and should probably try to do it more methodically. I have sometimes gone to NEW for the frontpage, after clicking MORE once or twice.

I honestly feel like I'd be wiser to let community zaps reflect community opinion; if something I post isn't well-received by the community, why should I spend the CCs I've accumulated to force it down their throats?

reply

I think you have the right attitude. The heuristic k00b has described to me is that rewards should go to people who do things that make SN better.

Your preferred mode of authenticity certainly fits that description, so just zap whatever you like and see what happens.
