I think Bitcoin Core should simply close the repo.
Then fork it, start a new implementation called "Bitcoin Potato," and all the contributors just move over there.
Now, they'd no longer need to worry about the tacit prestige and authority that comes with being a Core dev and maintaining a software package that descends from Satoshi's original implementation. Just build what they want, no strings attached.
