I think that even if we end up with multiple popular implementations, being a maintainer of a popular one will be a horrendous job. It's kind of like being a mod for a popular subreddit or running a social media platform: you can never please everybody, and somebody will always react badly.

I think Bitcoin Core should simply close the repo.

Then fork it, start a new implementation called "Bitcoin Potato," and all the contributors just move over there.

Now, they'd no longer need to worry about the tacit prestige and authority that comes with being a Core dev and maintaining a software package that descends from Satoshi's original implementation. Just build what they want, no strings attached.

This goes for most FOSS nowadays. Hasn't been nice since covid really. Too many people are convinced they can do better, and then deliver crap.

I hope this isn’t our fate if SN becomes popular

reply

You mean SN isn't popular... now??? :D

reply

Hardly lol it got like 100 users

reply

we're like a midsized subreddit lol

reply

Midsized... I'm not even sure that SN is that big.

It took 15 years for Bitcoin to become a Store of Value (albeit a volatile one).
IMO it takes another 15 years to become a widespread medium of exchange SN is just the first evidence of that, using the Lightning Network.

Yeah I agree SN is a baby
