Sadly the data used was not for all of the states and relied on publicly available voter registration data from 24 states and DC. That being said the numbers track what I would have expected from the 3 major sports leagues. There were a couple of surprises though.

Independents being such a large part of both the NHL (48.6%) and the NFL (44%) was surprising to me. The NFL only had 34% registered as Democrats and 20% as Republicans. The MLB being the only league that had more Republicans registered than any others was not surprising at all (53%) but it was interesting to see the NHL came in second with 43% registered Republicans meaning that with the Independents at 48.6% less than 10% of the NHL is registered as Democrats.

Overall its insightful to see I the NBA having 10% registered Republicans was another pretty interesting thing.

“When combining the data of the five leagues, the share of independents is 41 percent, higher than the national average of 27 percent,” the study said.

I am not surprised they skewed independent. They are likely either not interested in politics or don't care to share their preferences.

I think the privacy piece is the answer. I’ve heard that they vote Republican far more frequently than you’d expect, if you were just going off of their public statements.

You know who hates taxes the most? Me…but after me it’s people with money.

Only people who don't pay taxes like taxes. Haha

This is actually true

About half of USA tax filers pay no federal income tax so an increase in spending doesn't hurt them

reply

What if I don’t pay taxes because I hate them?

then you are smart. Haha

It makes sense that they wouldn't want people to be able to box them into a corner so to speak politically. That being said some of them like less than 10% of NHL players being registered Democrats does surprise me given the locations and the outreach the league does with only a few Russian players pushing back on it.

Might be as simple as taxes.

If you are American and play in Canada, you pay income tax to Canada and USA, a double whammy
