A judge in Massachusetts is on his way toward issuing a preliminary injunction to stop Kalshi's sports prediction contracts there, agreeing with state authorities that they're potentially violating its sports-betting laws.
Superior Court Justice Christopher Barry-Smith issued a ruling on Tuesday that says the court is on its way this week toward prohibiting Kalshi "from offering sports-related event contracts in the absence of the required license under the Sports Wagering Law."
The judge said that the state needs to propose its injunction tomorrow in such a way that it doesn't derail people's existing contracts, then by Friday Kalshi has to respond to that proposal. The judge will order the halt at the end of the week under that agreement, though a window remains open for requested stays or delays.

Your use of "monopolies" hurt my brain

If I said oligopolies no one would have understood. I'm practicing my twitter voice

And if you had said "duopolies", someone would Acktualy-ed you about a third company.

I'm not a fan of states regulating gambling, but Kalshi's "oh, it's not a bet, it's a contract" thing was such a smug example of semantics that I can't believe they couldn't see this coming.

reply

Don't they know those smug semantics are only for the regime?

reply

All Kalshi has to do is pay tribute to the state patronage network, must have inexperienced counsel who thought the law mattered

I am not sure that this will last. Kalshi is obviously going to appeal and due to the lay of the land right now I dont think it works under Sports Wagering since it goes so much further beyond sports.

Its clear the whole landscape needs to get cleaned up but regulation through litigation isnt the way to go and in general the American people have shown they really do not like it.
