It did end up being a rugpull. I was one of the players and put in a lot of time to solve it (I feel foolish now). The game ended yesterday officially, but since no one is able to solve the unsolvable last stage (probably deliberately created so), the game is now running "indefinitely until someone solves it", Basically no one is getting paid anything.

But the videos were good, the copywriting was good and I imagine it took a months for the talented video-editor to create it.
