One annoying thing about research work: how you build a query can have orders of magnitudes differences in how long it takes to complete the query. But I don't really know if it's worth optimizing a query that I really only need to do one (or a few) times. On the other hand, I don't like waiting 10 minutes for my query to complete.

reply

Unless you're talking hours, don't waste time to optimize.

reply

There's a bit of uncertainty there. If I do everything correctly the first time, I only need to run it once. But if I make mistakes, or realize I need other data fields / other calculations, I may need to run it again. Right now my inefficient version takes about 18 minutes to run. If I have to re-do it 3 or 4 times, it gets into the hours.

As for whether to optimize, there's uncertainty about the gains I'd be able to achieve and how long it'd take me to figure out a better approach. I suspect there is though, based on known structures in the data.

And then, here I am, wasting time thinking and talking about it.

I probalby won't optimize though, because those 20 minute runs can be filled with other things, like posting on Stacker News.

reply

So for a 20 minute run, I'd develop the query on a subset (LIMIT statement?) if possible and not worry about tuning. I do a lot of data pipes and I start optimizing only if I a single run takes over an hour and I am confident that I can actually make it faster.

Any hints about what's going on? I received this message about a failed LN transaction:

Latest lightning error: Unknown payout error

Raw error: cln err code: 205 - message Failed: Could not find route without excessive cost

Yes, I had plenty of liquidity. I also receive payments from this party regularly. So, I cant see it really being a routing issue. No, they don't have a public node to which I can open a channel, which would solve issues.

Just because you have enough inbound liquidity doesn’t mean there’s a cheap route to your node

reply

Yes, I know. It just seems weird because we transact almost daily, none of my channels are offline, and this hasn't occurred before. I guess it's just one of those things?

reply
36 sats \ 13 replies \ @ek 12 Dec

Could it be that the payment was very small, so the fee ends up being relatively high? Like if they’re trying to send you 10 sats, the fee itself might be 10 sats or something.

reply

I thought of that, but this transaction is the most sats ever between , or at least close. I don't know. It's also weird that they have stopped trying to resend. It sounds fishy, but they are a big company.

Maybe their Knots node doesn't handle lightning well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

(Sorry, I don't really believe that, just thought it would be funny. Whatever you run for onchain shouldn't affect routing on lightning afaik.)

reply

You might be right😀 I'm sure you guessed the company. I just heard back from them. They said it is not a liquidity issue, as I knew, but that my peers are asking too high fees. Here is their solution:

If possible ask your peers to lower their fees.

Yeah, I'm sure they'll listen to me 😀

lol, are they not deducting the routing fee from what they send you?

So if you put more of your own nodes between them and your recipient node, you can earn routing fees, also called a fee-siphoning attack?

Yes, I moved 10 months ago and still didn’t setup my other ones. I want to buy a big one “soon,” so I feel like it would be a waste of time to plug in the other ones, haha

I want to drink some, but I'm scared of starting to drink alone. What if I like it?? haha

reply

I really like it. I've been drinking it on and off for 40 years. I like the taste, and despite its reputation, I don't get ridiculously drunk drinking it. Also, no stomach or bad hangover issues. And, it's cheap! I sound like a commercial.

I sound like a commercial.

Haha, this made me laugh out loud.

How do you drink it? Pure? With or without ice? Is it a crime to put it in coffee?

reply

Some people like it with coca cola. I never tried it with coffee. I like to fill a glass with ice, pour a few inches in, then wait a few minutes. The ice chills the whiskey, and the melting water cuts it slightly. We call that "on the rocks." It's also good straight if you like shots, but I'm too old for that.
