I don't want to exaggerate the significance of this event. I have been trying to do this for years without success, and when it happened it was sort of no big deal. Maybe that's a good thing. I own a little mobile home trailor that I have rented for years. I have had some turnover recently. I found a tenant over the weekend who wanted to pay me with cash app, so it was a pretty easy bridge to offering him a discount for paying with lightning.

It still feels good. Maybe Dorsey is on to something.

It's a month to month lease denominated in dollars. He only gets the discount if he pays with bitcoin. So far, so good. He paid first month & security with bitcoin.

Unfortunately, I don't think he knows the first thing about bitcoin. Most of my prospective tenants are low wage workers who are living hand to mouth. All he cared about was that it was a way to get a discount.

I wonder if we could try the opposite as clients. Offer to pay a premium if the seller lets us pay in bitcoin.

Maybe. I really think it all depends on the type of dwelling you're talking about. What I own is really low end. Think "Trailer Park Boys".

Landlords and tenants of nicer places might be more convential normies who will fear "crypto."

Good question. I use a resident I know there to find me tenants. For years I have told her to offer prospective tenants a discount with bitcoin. The conversation was always awkward. She obviously thought I was nuts. This time, the tenant uses cash app all the time, so he sees the bitcoin option on the app constantly and thought it was normal. Usually I deal with people who pay with venmo or zelle.

Someone told me cash app is only for sketchy people and/or transactions. I was unaware of this stigma.

Yes. There is a big stigma, or at least there was. I don't know why. It's no different than venmo, so far as I can tell.

I don't know why, either. It requires KYC just like Venmo, so I don't see why it's different. Maybe it didn't used to?

I think it was always KYC. I remember the stigma going way back. I have to be honest. Before I retired, and before I got into bitcoin, I got cash app because all of my criminal clients used it. None of them had venmo like me.

I wonder what this really means when all of it happens invisibly, converted magically by Cash App. Not that it's not worth doing - awareness matters - but what's the net accomplishment?

I'm really glad you brought this up. I wonder the same thing. In this case, there might have been a benefit. Maybe it's worth going into more detail. Cash app does a very automatic switch between bitcoin and dollars. But, in my case, I wanted to be paid in lightning for a number of reasons, one of which was the possible increase in on chain fees causing issues. Anyway, the trailer and my new tenant are in a state where cash app offers lightning. Where I am in NY, cash app doesn't. So, the tenant had to learn the difference between on chain and lightning. I would prefer payment to my own node anyway, so he had to learn to pay a lightning invoice to make his first payment to me. That's something, I guess.

Have you ever spilled something sweet and then found a trail of ants snaking from your dropped jam to some distant lair outside? Something like that, I think -- the channel flows, the capital allocation, the tendrils being sent out, knitting into pores of the brick. And so, too, for the mental infrastructure slowly built out and reinforced.

Hard to assess, but real. So def worth doing and caring about. But maybe valuable in a different way than we usually think.

That's what I'm thinking. I so wanted to do this I really gave him a good deal. It will give him a positive association, and maybe he will start studying it. I usually develop a friendly relationship with my tenant over time, so maybe I'll slowly bring him along.
