I just tried to on-board a rando, and he was unable to download either Muun or Phoenix from Play store without adding details such as email / debit card etc.
Looks like he was running stock (google) android on a low end phone.
Why might that be? How can he download a wallet without doxxing himself? (except the fact that he's already running full google, lol)
helping him install Graphene might be a bit much, plus it wasn't a Pixel

Also you can install LineageOS (without any crap google shit) on almost any other device that is not Pixel. Works wonderful.
reply
I can suggest Lineage (or Caly?) to him but it could be a bit of an ask, as he wasn't too sure about BTC to begin with
I agree it's the best approach though
reply
CalyxOS also is good, but do not work on non-pixel phones. Yeah, nowadays the new phones coming with android are full of shit bloatware, it's a nightmare to use them. That's why you MUST wipe them out and install a clean OS.
reply
agreed, the clean OS (graphene) is what drove me to Android after long-time iPhone

Google play asks for a debit card when setting up a new phone or account. Just hit skip. You don't have to enter it.
reply
the phone was already set up, and he said he'd downloaded from play store before. Didn't see the skip as it was a different language

Graphene looks interesting, but it's still Android, and you need one of their shitty phones. If you want to get rid of that thingy, you could have a looks at PostmarketOS, a real Linux distribution for phones and other mobile devices, even older ones, like the ones in my beloved Samsung Galaxy Y (codename totoro) collection.
reply
I love the idea of linux phones, but the reality is that Android is miles ahead in terms of security
If I had one of the necessary phones lying around (https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Devices) I'd definitely give PostmarketOS a crack
It's not really relevant in this case though, for a novice user who just wants to download a bitcoin wallet app
reply
Android ahead in terms of security? ROTFL It comes already factory compromised.
reply
depends which android you're talking about
I'm only considering Graphene here, wouldn't use any other flavour
I'm rooting for linux, I really like the idea of being able to plug in a keyboard and use it as an emergency laptop. I ordered a pinephone but in the end they wouldn't ship it as I didn't have a mobile number for the shipping company.
Stupid reason but this seems to be the world we live in. Give up your personal details for a privacy phone, lol
reply
I get (either bought or for free) all my hardware, including my phones, second hand, and use PosmarketOS or Graphene, and I much preferred the former than the latter, of course.

You have a few solutions
  1. Install the APK from Github
  2. Create a burner Google account
You don't need to put a debit card. You can just skip it.
reply
ok will advise he uses the skip, didn't see it but will tell him to look for it! thanks
installing APK also sounds like a great option, this is possible using bloatware Google Android?

Of course, that's one of the last great things about Android.
