WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Boeing broke ground Friday on a new expansion project for the 787 Dreamliner site in South Carolina.
The company announced its plans to expand and upgrade its site near Charleston International Airport and a second campus in late 2024.
Boeing said it is investing over $1 billion in the project, which it expects will add 1,000 new jobs over the next five years.
The expansion will feature a new final assembly building, roughly 1.2 million square feet in size, including space for airplane production, support, office space, a parts preparation area and a vertical fin paint facility, as well as additions the the Interiors Responsibility Center, which makes parts of the interior of the aircraft.
“We continue to see strong demand for the 787 Dreamliner family and its market-leading efficiency and versatility. We are making this significant investment today to ensure Boeing is ready to meet our customers’ needs in the years and decades ahead,” Stephanie Pope, president and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said in a news release. “This site expansion is a testament to the incredible work of our Boeing teammates and deepens our commitment to them, to South Carolina, and to American manufacturing.”
Boeing said it currently has a backlog of nearly 1,000 787 Dreamliners, including 300 new orders this year, and has already delivered 1,200 of the aircraft
Boeing said those sales make the Dreamliner the best-selling wide-body passenger plane of all time.
Construction of the new facilities will be carried out by HITT Contracting and BE&K Building Group, with the work expected to employ about 2,500 people.

My Thoughts 💭

Boeing left for dead (over hyped due to the Wall Street machine) is now expanding and has a large backlog of its 787! For 11k BTC not too shabby. I wonder how much it costs to make one 787?
