I happened upon a great exercise today. I discovered that the easiest way to split open the fruit that surrounds a walnut, in order to get the walnut out, is to punch the fruit against a hard surface. So, I spent a decent chunk of the afternoon punching walnuts against my patio floor. Who needs a punching bag when there are walnuts to punch?

what is punching walnuts? I didn't know that was a thing

They fall off the tree inside a fruit that's about the size of an apple and it can be hard to get the nut out. I discovered, though, that the fruit splits open when it's smashed, which makes it fairly easy to peel away from the nut.
