I saw this article about how Planet Fitness is getting sued (by the U.S. govt, no less) for making it "exceedingly difficult to cancel gym membership", and thought the whole premise was humorous.
So, what are your nightmare cancellation stories, Stackers?
For me, I once tried to cancel a service I had signed up for through WordPress. I couldn't find any way to cancel, even online at the vendor's website.
  • Year 1: I deactivated my WordPress account thinking it'd automatically get canceled since I had subscribed through the WordPress marketplace.
  • Year 2: I got charged the annual subscription fee. So this time I email their customer service and ask directly to cancel, which they reply and say "click this link to cancel", which of course took me to a series of confirmation steps that are designed to confuse (small confirm cancellation button, opposite expected meanings of check mark vs "X" mark, etc.) But I managed to cancel and they emailed me to confirm cancellation.
  • Year 3: I get auto charged the annual subscription fee again! This time, I call my bank to dispute the charge and tell them to put the vendor on a do-not-charge list. The vendor then emails me to complain about me filing a dispute with the bank, saying I should have gotten in touch first. I told them what happened and they acknowledged they had made a mistake, "accidentally" keeping me on the subscription, but instead of apologizing they insisted I should have gotten in touch with them first rather than disputing the charge with the bank. FFS.
Once with the cell phone operator, I activated a service that was supposedly 35 reais a month, there when the credit card bill arrived it was 45 reais, when I looked they activated an insurance service and I don't remember what else, without knowing I began to search in the operator's app, and nothing there was nowhere to cancel that shit, I started searching on the web and nothing, there was nowhere, I searched on google and a youtube video came up, from someone who had gone through more or less the same thing, and I followed the step by step without a doubt I think I would never have found out how to cancel that if it weren't for that youtube video

Hahaha, I totally understand you. Telephone companies and their plans are crazy. I almost went through that, but I reacted and didn't fall into their trap.
reply
Praise God it didn't happen to you, hahaha.
Dude, I must have literally spent an entire afternoon searching the app for how to cancel that... hahaha.

I’ve installed the fitness coach app with free trial period. Quickly realised it wasn’t what I was looking for. Cancellation was only available through the chat support and you had to go through this embarrassing conversation where they kinda ask you to confirm that you want to remain fat before they cancel)

lol, that's scummy
reply
What madness, the worst thing is that they only care about charging you, not all of them but most of them.

Subscribing to just about any amazon product is a recurring nightmare. Audible, subscribe-and-save, prime, and prime video are packed with tons of dark UX patterns to keep you subscribed as long as possible. Yet, I continue to subject myself to them because the value is very competitive otherwise.
Also, I'm pretty sure I have an active Disney+ subscription that I do not know how to cancel or access. Every email I login with does not show it ... They should allow you to login with your credit card to cancel subscriptions.

I've lost count how many times my wife accidentally did "Subscribe & Save" on Amazon because that's the default option usually.

I had this issue with our mobile phone service. You cannot cancel online. The only way is to call up and wait over an hour to speak with someone. This is how they're able to survive because no one has time to make a 2 hour call!

Yikes, was this in the US or somewhere else?

I told the story of getting banned from Ember after requesting a refund on one of our podcast episodes. That was pretty epic.
Joined the ember app with a few other stackers to stack sats and bet on sports. They had some specials last Christmas time where if you bought some of the boosts from their marketplace through apple pay you got 100% of the purchase back credited to your sats balance so I figured why not and bought a couple of them. I think $5 and then $10 worth the second time. About a month later I noticed a charge to my apple pay for $5 from Ember that was made one day at 3am which I definitely did not make so I requested a refund through apple pay, which I received but about a week later I noticed in the app I had lost all functionality to bet on sports or withdraw my sats. They have no customer service so I talked to their bot and it told me my account was suspended for suspected fraudulent activity and there was no review process.
I am sure if they had any sort of customer service in place it could have gotten sorted out but I only had a few thousand sats left on there so I didn't bother. Still waiting for confirmation from them from 7 months ago that my account is deleted.
