I had forgotten how bonkers this story was. It's hard to feel sympathetic for the wildlife enforcement people, even though the article is largely on their side.
One note that stuck out to me: it says they are still checking people for deer tags. Don't you all up there in the northeast have a bit of an infestation of deer? I'm surprised enforcing tags is much of a priority.
It is kinda scary what can happen to your life if you attract the attention of an angry internet mob, though. I don't think the agents went about it the right way (couldn't they have sent a letter or just sent one or two people to talk first?) But the backlash seems disproportional as well.

It's ridiculous. The house across the street has 10-15 deer munching away on grass and weeds every morning when I walk the dogs. Most people around here have given up on vegetable gardening. We haven't, but we live with a state prison like fence around our little patch.

Yeah, deer are a plague. I'm surprised its not year-round open season.
I looked at the season dates and its surprisingly short.

There are a lot of bow hunters near me. The problem is homeowners don't want guys tracking bloody prints through their backyards.

It's govt what do you expect. Any nuisance they can be, any control they can exert, they will do it.
