pull down to refresh

really quite embarrassed at how long it took me to see that the man is basically a cult leader. he talks utter bs yet presents his words with charisma and a veneer of profundity. he talks in circles, is badly informed on subjects he claims to be an authority on, he often makes flagrantly false claims, and he incessantly lies.
the man is basically a wreck of a human being and is a terrible role model to base ones life on. even has accusations of serious drug abuse and sexual escapades with his students. not to mention he's clinically depressed and taking high doses of meds.
as i said, I'm embarrassed. there were a few months where i really watched a lot of his content, and even did his self-authoring suite and bought his audiobook. that was probably like 5 or 6 years ago now. i drifted away from his work and eventually flipped and started seeing through his charlatanic noises. seen his name pop up a fair bit in bitcoin twitter recently so thought I'd post here.
anyone else been suckered into his depressing, pathetic and nihilistic orbit?
his older stuff is great, he was an important voice when he came into the limelight in 2017. He still is a somewhat important voice, but lately it feels like he's been degrading. his take on anonymous accounts being separated from KYC accounts on twitter feels like a butthurt 4th grader's take on the issue, his understanding of perception of the internet in general kinda sucks ass.

I know many people who were transformed (for the better) by him. I'd caution against throwing out the good he's done because of some of the bad.
People aren't perfect, including our heroes. If you feel a need to polarize yourself for or against someone for merely being fallible, you'll quickly wind up alone like most people on this Earth. Be forgiving, don't forget, and act accordingly.
That said, I've also found JBP less enjoyable to listen to since he became famous. It could be because he's become repetitive or because some of it's gone to his head. I don't know what exactly, but I don't dismiss everything he says or stands for as a result.
There are far worse people to look up to.

He's getting old. Combine that with substance abuse issues, likely constant feelings of persecution, dealing with personal attacks, culture wars, and the public pressure to be an intellectual it's not surprising to see his personality get a big wonky and less focused as he gets older. Old people love to ramble.

The benzodiazepine use as far as I understand was prescribed to him and he had a terrible reaction to trying to get off of it. At least what I remember hearing him say, it was hell on earth dealing with both using it and the withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal from benzos can literally kill you. Source
Benzos are habit-forming drugs. They are not intended for long-term use and, in as little as 3-5 weeks, can create physical dependence – even if taken only as prescribed. Physical dependence means that a person has started to build a tolerance for benzodiazepines and will need to continue increasing their dosage to get the same effects. They may experience withdrawal when they stop taking the drug or reduce their dosage.

Yeah, people are fragile. I never prescribe that shit. I bet it's hard to say no when you have a VIP patient like JP though.

Just tried watching a recent video. There's an ad read every 10 minutes. Crazy.

I find good value in what he preaches TBH ....sometimes there isnt any
Im neutral on Jordan ... my neutrality comes from a place of not thinking highly of any person but in the sense of (what can I learn from any person)
reply
Yeah, he just seems to say what he thinks and doesn't give a fuck if people get triggered lol. One has to respect that
Also at least he's open to learn about Bitcoin. Can't say that about many others.

Drifted away from the dude after extracting the necessary value. First time I started questioning my brainwashing happened because of him.
That being said, he has either become a little bit nuts, or I just hadn't noticed it before.

I liked his views regarding gender identity. So far, I only thought people (reddit, twitter) don't like him because he does not share their opinion on emotionally charged topics.
So I would be very interested why you think this, for example with citations:
he talks in circles, is badly informed on subjects he claims to be an authority on, he often makes flagrantly false claims, and he incessantly lies.
To me, quite the opposite seems to be true. But what do I know.
reply
Jordan is pre-benzo is the antidote to nihilism.
reply
He is angry a lot, so I don't enjoy listening to him.
reply
Where was he angry?
To me, it seemed like his opponents are quite angry about his views while he stays calm and collected.
So I am quite interested in why you think so.

simple yet effective. nice approach

I used to get a lot of value form him, found him on JRE and he was going against wokeness which at the time I felt was a big issue and I read his bought his books and I still feel it has value
But I think he doesn't practice what he preaches now, his given into fiat incentives of fame, egagement, outrage and money and it takes a strong man to reject those incentives.
Not making an excuse for him, but I think we have to destory our heros and become our own heros
reply
Disagree with everything you said, except for the fact that he was indeed criticized by bitcoin twitter for his views on anonymity. And btw I think he is probably right that 'most anons are trolls', it's just that ID verification is not the solution.
I think his tweets are usually too harsh, and he is much more thoughtful in his long-form content. Aside from that, he is a great role model.
reply
I think he should get off twitter for his own good, and he himself probably knows that as well. Jordan's advice is generally good imo and overall is a net positive. I think most people who are critical of him don't actually listen and understand what he is trying to say. I don't think he is nihilistic, he actually offered philosophies that I believe as another comment said are the "antidote to nihilism" like existentialism and absurdism. As I mentioned in a comment in this thread, the benzo use was a tragedy and not abuse as far as I can tell. Never heard about the sexual assault accusations.

is badly informed on subjects he claims to be an authority
The only subject he claims to be an authority in is psychology and he has objective peer reviewed credentials in psychology.
I don't follow every little detail of his life. Most of his lectures I've watched are fine. The general ethos of his books are fine.
Generally speaking he's fine.
I find the cult leader accusation doubious and a bit lazy. You can literally say the same about any public figure.

Usually I just take ideas that people talk about, and ignore their personal life.
When multiple people from different walks of life present the same idea from different points of view, it increases my confidence that the idea itself might be interesting and probably true. On the other hand, some ideas are not interesting or true and with this mechanism most of them simply don't work.
People often will have both of those, good and bad ideas, dismissing the entire content because it comes from the same person doesn't seem wise to me.

A complete moron.
