With U.S. President Donald Trump threatening to jack up tariffs to massive heights starting July 9 — including 50 percent tariffs on nearly all goods from the EU — the global economy hangs on a cliff edge.
Last week, the bloc floated the idea of creating an alternative to the World Trade Organization (WTO), cooperating with like-minded countries to maintain the rule of law in trade. But there is a better option: Keep the WTO, but kick out the U.S.
Who would have thought Trump who wants to prove that he's the strongest leader (or US is the strongest) by exerting a misuse of his powers not only against the enemies but also against the apparent friends.
Anyways this made me guess a few things....
  • This — Kicking out US from WTO — is even possible?
  • What's the existence of WTO without USA?
  • I suspect Trump would take US out of NATO as retaliation if 'this' somehow is manifested by the bloc.
Still...
To combat Trump, we must be prepared to construct a WTO without the U.S.
Trump is not the US!
Or, is he?

Of course she is a professor in Canada. Canadians are under some delusion that we can live under some harmonious, global institution preserving world without the US. It’s ludicrous.
reply
It's going to be a rude awakening when she finds out the global institution running the world is the US.

Canadians are kind of naive.

So you now supporting the annexation of Canada to be 51st state! ;)
Why does US need to be the patron of these global organisations? I don't support it and I think Canada shouldn't either.

US is the largest net importer of goods in the world and issues the currency most global trade is settled in. So you could possibly have a WTO without them but it would just make an already questionably useful organization even more pointless.
reply
Yes, that's true and I already made a questioning remark about WTO's existence without US. However like many others I hope US should not bully other nations and this should stop. As US currency is the most global, I believe US is always in profits with or without tarrifs. All this tarrif-tarrif is a mere drama and Trump's been manipulating the market to fill his/his family's pockets because he knows that he won't get a better and another chance to do it.
reply
I'm all for it. Let's be rid of these supernational organizations.
reply
Why not we rid of the International bully Trump? Wouldn't that be easier?
reply
How about both?
reply
Just do it if anyone can. I guess both aren't gonna happen. At least Trump is staying for 3.5 more years and USA forever if WTO wants to remain in existence.
I don't think either of these is gonna happen.

A woman from Canada has already dreamt half and woke up. Haha
Whenever I see the word "save" in headlines or posters these days, my brain goes "save... from what?"
Seems appropriate here
reply
I certainly agree with you on both. I don't think many US people still approve what he is trying to achieve here. If he keeps on, he'd certainly leave US more relegated than ever.
