It was one of my childhood dreams to bring clean water to the masses. Then reality set in and I had to enter the Fiat mines to survive. But I always wondered what it would be like to design a water well for a community that has no access to clean water. Engineers without Boarders do a lot of these types of projects but I never had the passion to join them.
I say all that to share this article I got from a waster water company Storm Water Pros LLC.
One of the central components of the Tanzania 2024 Water Project was the drilling of a new water well in Kikatiti, Arusha, Tanzania. Prior to the well, women and children in the community had to walk long distances—often facing physical dangers, exhaustion, and even abuse—just to collect water from unsafe sources. Thanks to the generous support of StormWater Pros, Water For Life Charity, and other partners, this new well is providing over 5,000 local residents with a reliable and clean water source. Key details about the well:
  • Location: Kikatiti, Arusha, Tanzania, Africa
  • Well Depth: 400 feet
  • Well Capacity: 200 gallons per hour
  • Well Service: Over 5,000 local residents
  • Well Cost: $25,000
With this well in place, women no longer need to spend hours walking to collect water, and families have reliable access to clean water for drinking, cooking, and hygiene. This simple yet transformative project has improved health outcomes and safety for the community, and it’s just the beginning.
Very cool project but $25k isn’t cheap plus I wonder if this well will be operational after a few years. O&M is what will matter most so I hope the company provides training and resources to make sure this well stays running.
