I love the self-restraint on this. But what about everything else? What about the photoshop "scandals"? In the end, I don't think that watermarking is the solution, but for the time being it may help more than hurt.
I think that we are going to see cryptography put into cameras... they are going to have their own keys signed by the factory with a chain that can be verified PKI kinda thing. If it has wifi it will make a merkle tree of its pictures and post the root hash to open timestamps so it can verify what all the pictures are that existed and cryptographically attest to their authenticity

Oof! You're probably right. I'm also sure that if they only get a whiff of the possibilities of this, bureaucrats will turn this into a surveillance nightmare!!! So, perhaps running an unlicensed AI to recreate a new version of my photo before I distribute it would be a good privacy tool!
