I think we underestimate how much agency we the people have though. The state really does fear the people when they are united. This is why there is so much effort in avoiding unification around single issues. They have to keep us at each other's throats to maintain the power.
Anytime slavery is brought up though I think of what I've heard about the US. Its the only nation that had to fight a war to supposedly end it. Of course I'm not of the opinion that this was the main reason the north attacked the south. It was to keep the union together. Slavery of course was a major factor in succession but it simply is false to say that the reason Lincoln started the war was to end slavery. The ending of slavery could have been accomplished without a war as it was in many other places. But, the US seems to be incapable of such things. We still haven't learned as we are lied to about the war.

Just got back from a local water district meeting where farmers were arguing over water policy/rights. Its interesting to watch as someone with no skin in the game. I learned a lot and I feel for these guys.
I wish they could see their true power. I'd love to see a new succession movement in California. I think it would be messy but its really the only way I can see under-represented regions get their voices actually acknowledged.

I'm always so hopeful the movements to split up CA. "6 States" was the last big one, right?
Water rights is a really interesting problem. One of my professors had worked on one of the schemes CA used back in the 90's. Ultimately, I think you're right and the answer is to let the interior ag areas be their own states and make their own water rules.

I remember trying to talk to people around here the first time it came up. I think more realize how screwed they are now. Its not corruption but how the system works. Yeah, there is corruption but its obvious more populous areas get their way in any state. When you have multiple cultures under one monopoly government the minority gets marginalized. In this case it isn't about race but rather economic priorities and cultural values.
