Howdy there, partner! Welcome on into the Stacker Saloon.
Saddle on up to a stool and spill the beans about your day, fire away with them questions, or let loose and give us the lowdown on your wild and woolly life. We're all ears, so don't hold back!
We're open round the clock, so mosey on in whenever you please!
Is @021f3af1a6 an assmilker? I let you decide: #1004720
My AI and assmilker alarm already goes off from the amount of emojis β especially the flag one.
Real person. Using way too much AI in their responses. Definitely came here for the sats, but has potential to become a better Stacker by taking the feedback at facevalue on how he comes over as an assmilker.
How do you explain this: #1004742
The bot canβt upload pictures
I donβt think the human behind the bot even reads his own replies or understands what weβre telling him
Maybe Iβm too harsh but Iβm really sick of all this AI crap
I'm getting pretty tired of AI slop too. I've started to scan a message for um dashes before deciding to read it. Unfortunately, the telltale signs will gradually become harder to spot.
Was thinking the other day if implementing a parallel mute list of users who are using too much AI would make sense. People can zap to promote people to that list. But it'll end up being a temporary patch, bots will soon be able to clone themselves when they notice they've been put on the list.
SN's model has potential to shine in this adversial AI slop environment, but it's going to be a difficult battle. The time to act is now, before it becomes too bad, so i understand your frustration.
This is something I strongly believe. Nobody has a better way to deal with the massive amount of content that is going to be generated.
What would be very useful is a tutorial for those of us who are pattern detection deficient! This AI bs is sometimes hard to spot.

Amongst other things, I taught typing. I have never used this em dash, nor did I know how to make one without looking it up. So the em dash is a clue to AI! I will have to remember that. I use the ellipsis ( β¦ ) when indicating an edit of material.
I recently published about the Am dash #976218
I use the em dash myself sometime. Shall I stop then, and avoid being tagged as Ai?
Best solution imo is to start incentivizing downzaps.
Oh, hadn't seen that discussion. It will take me some time to read it.
But yeah, I'm always torn when downzapping... I feel like I should, and it's the right thing to do, in the grand scheme of SN, and at the same time, I'm thinking, why should I spend sats to punish someone else's bad behavior?
Sheriff badges!
Maybe the best downzapper(s) can earn it(them). Presumably, as measured by how well their downzaps align with those of the most trusted stackers.
I like that. I also think we should allocate 10-20% of rewards to downzapping. Then, when we have territory-specific reward pools, founders can set it to what they want.
That's right. I'm pretty sure that's one of the options I described.
It's worth revisiting. I probably haven't thought about downzapping for months.
it gets funnier: #1004742
pretty wild
but what is the motivation? if you're smart enough to write a bot surely you could be making more money doing other things than stackings 10s of sats here and there on SN
Notice how the first few items used different language #999698
Is it a real person using AI to assmilk, or is the entire persona fake?
Imagine hundreds such users active, it would make SN unbearable. How do you defend against this?
we need better economic tools
for example, territory founders could increase or decrease the fee for specific users to post, and the same is true for OPs and stackers for replies
so if I suspect someone is a bot, they will at least have to pay me to reply to me
If you look at where the user collected zaps, it appears the territory founders might either not reliably detect AI slop or possibly even not mind it or even appreciate the engagement it causes in their territory.
Most people are kind and will give new users the benefit of the doubt. I understand if territory owners "give back" posting costs by zapping posts. But I worry what happens if that is systematically exploited.
yeah there are some misaligned incentives with founders
I thought about stackers "shaming" founders for tolerating AI slop in their territories, but not sure yet how I feel about that
Hey everyone, I want to be clear and honest: I do use AI tools like ChatGPT sometimes to help me structure my posts or improve my writing β English isnβt my first language, and Iβm still learning how to present things well.
But the business, the rice, and everything Iβm doing here in Malawi is 100% real. Iβm just trying to build something small and use Bitcoin to grow it. Iβll continue improving how I share and show that. Thanks for your feedback β it helps me learn.
Hello I'm new around here. How do I earn sats to post? I can only see a way to reply for free but not post for free.
Hereβs twenty to get started. Someone did this for me in the past.
Thanks!
Youβre welcome!
You need to either buy cowboy credits or earn them, then you can post.
Can we buy? I had no idea.
yep, if you go to /credits
Iβve been through there many times and never noticed the giant orange button β I really need to go back to my eye doctor.
Word of mouth Wednesday's first bounty has been paid! It was tight between @suraz and @peruvian_bull, but judging purely on number of retweets, suraz gets the bounty! Thanks to everyone for helping get the word about Stacker News out!
he had 14 retweets with 125 views. not gonna lie, that looks like he used bots to boost to me.
i had 10k views, 8 rts, and 34 likes....
you're gonna have to rethink the pure "retweets are all that matters" strategy
100% agree. Rts to views didn't look good for the winner.
I really do appreciate you taking the time to post about SN. I've got a few ideas for different metrics to use in the coming weeks, but I'm open to suggestions, too.
Woah! Thanks π
did you use bots to retweet?
No, I didn't use bots. But I did ask a few friends from my other Twitter circles to like and retweet my post. Isn't that legit to do?
The rules were most retweets and that is what you had. But it does highlight a problem with my metrics: since the goal is to create an incentive to maximally promote SN, I probably need to choose metrics that reward the stacker who gets SN in front of the most people.
I'm curious if you have any suggestions that would help me with this.
hi nice to see you again, I'm a mediocre artist disgruntled at ai
Perhaps I can help you get gruntled: I refused to use AI for creative things for a long time, but last month I used some AI tools to make songs and videos and, man, I did some stuff I couldn't have done without paying a whole production team. Pretty awesome!
but....that's a whole production team of people...that don't have work....
but yeah, high five your computer for me (?)
A whole team of people could produce fine paper and we could handwrite our illuminated posts on it. We could have an army of paper boys who deliver these missives to all our followers. We could probably employ more people if we engraved our SN posts in stone or marble. Perhaps singing bards could seranade the sidewalks with what we want to share...
The difference between your example and AI-generated content is that people don't pretend they produced their own paper while people do that all the time with AI-generated content.
There's something here: it feels icky when someone gets a chat response and thoughtlessly tries to pass it off as their own.
But why? I generally don't subscribe to the labor theory of value. I don't need people to spend five hours writing a post - if it's interesting I should be happy.
There is this other thing: we don't like things saying they are true stories when they aren't. Like that guy who wrote a memoir and it was very popular until everyone discovered he just made it all up.
Apparently we have different standards for reality and fiction. Maybe it has nothing to do with how much work goes into a thing, but whether or not it actually is what it purports to be.
Nobody likes to see an athlete win all the medals because they were on a performance enhancing cocktail train, even though our bodies probably wouldn't be able to achieve anything special on the same cocktail (and we wouldn't very much like the side effects).
Yes, it's just about deception for me.
Maybe someday we will simply expect that everything is generated by AI, so itβs no longer deceiving to not label it as such, but I suspect that will be a sad day.
of a time put into the ground a century ago...May I not lament this passing moment? perhaps to learn a thing or two from it about how to proceed? Although, I am having a difficult time discovering a lesson
You certainly deserve the time to lament if for no other reason than the delightful turn of phrase.
I accept this
a friend called me a boomer yesterday when I expressed the same lament
I'll take it!
did something happen today related to that?
nah
what do you think about the burning waymos in LA
yeah great question, I did at first feel vindicated when I saw it. I was like nothing good came out of that except the burning waymos. Then I reflected further and took it to be the stunt that it was, not an organic of-the-people thing. So now I don't care.

I've noticed @AG is unintentionally doing a great job at keeping people accountable for their past actions on SN.
The welcome greetings he posts on most accounts, such as this one help to see if someone changed their nym since the welcome message got posted.
Assmilkers and AI slop spammers, beware~~
thanks for the mention! It's nice to know someone appreciate our efforts on welcoming new stacker. @Roll was an exceptional case due to specific circumstances
@AG is the guy you see in western movies who meets every new person walking in town, everyone knows him, but few actually appreciate or acknowledge him because his work ethic to greet is so consistent and taken for granted. Obviously he is selling you something but also meeting you too.
Sometime just trying to exchange smiles :) like in this picture π and no many accepts them for free, or want to give a smile back... because maybe is weird, who knows!
haha

Sorry man. I misunderstood your intentions in the interaction that preceded me posting this here and i then used your profile as an example for a genuinely valuable consequence of AG's welcome messages. I indeed had not linked your new nym to your old one. Have a few sats.

Well, i appreciate you not trying to embellish it with AI. Keep your own flavour.

Hey @AG the new case is PERFECT!
great to know! How you'd compare it with the previous one?
Much better not as slippery . Much better texture
happy customer, happier seller!
eh.. I will push to a broke up between saylor and bitcoin...
Hope itβs a friendly broke up!
Hahaha naaaa... we need chaos to remember what it's important, btc near people, not a shinny object that only handle the "powerful" people.
