Interesting post. I haven't read it through, but here's something that stood out to me:
Johns Hopkins? For some reason that name popped up to me when the OP mentioned "because it was just too obvious." Maybe I'm wrong though.
If things stay the way they are right now, I wouldn't be surprised if Bitcoin becomes a purely KYC endeavor. Forever trapped as a dollarized asset to be traded and speculated on.
Even if you have non-KYC sats, every white market shop you can spend Bitcoin on will probably ask for KYC if you opt to buy stuff in Bitcoin. Perhaps, they'll just outright ban your non-KYC UTXOs because it came from an unregulated source.
The future looks bleak, if I'm being honest. I personally think that the only way to reverse this is if there's a massive culture shift on Bitcoin holders from "number go up" to actually thinking about Bitcoin as an alternative form of money.
Very apt comparison with the GNU people. Those are the same exact people that I remember whenever I read a post from a "Bitcoin maximalist."
Huh. My country's on Top 5 but it doesn't feel like it on the ground. This is probably 80-90% Axie shipcoinery that got the country on that spot.
The relay control. I find Primal's relay control a bit lacking compared to Amethyst. It's a bit of a shame since I really like how Primal looks and runs.
Oh, the lightning button as well. I don't use the built-in Primal wallet so it would be nice if that doesn't show up in my UI if I'm not using it.
That's just the nature of hosted services and the web and the only way to amend that is to actually have control over your data.
It could be through self-hosting or at the very least archiving your online data.
Huh? Sure. But the goal is to minimize the amount of trust and control that you have to give to other people. I host a Nostr relay for myself, for example.
Sure, I might have to use someone else's relays for reach but I always have a recourse in that my notes are also being sent to a node that I control.
Ben continues in his thread, "[The moderator crackdown is] just a reminder that anything you post on any of these platforms can and will be used for profit. It's just a matter of time until all your messages on Discord, Twitter etc. are scraped, fed into a model and sold back to you."
Someone just realized the importance of hosting your own infrastructure. C'est la vie.
If this continues and people like them get their way, Bitcoin will cease to be freedom money. It will just be another dollarized asset for bankers and traders to gamble on.
So much for "hyperbitcoinization." 🙄
No surprise. It's being shilled to oblivion in Latin America and other third world countries for remittances.
I personally think that the reason why it's popular is because it's piggybacking on the "USD" label and the moniker "stablecoin", giving it an appearance that it's somehow better than the other crypto assets since it's "stable." It should be called "fiatcoin" fwiw.
It's alright. I have a nostr profile, I occasionally check that for new stuff. I also occasionally check this website for new stuff.
They're just tools for discovery and discussion. It's nice to at least have an idea on the latest going-ons in the Bitcoin space.
