Ten reasons why I enjoy working at NorthLight
  1. Sometimes, I wear my trusty suit to work and impress everyone with an immaculately styled salaryman look. That’s because a Japanese guest is scheduled to visit the school, so being the staff who speaks the most Japanese, I will be tasked to have some interaction with him/her.
Okay, not that Japanese educators often descend upon my school, but the two occasions in which they did so were so memorable that I cherish them as my fond memories. It’s most likely the thrill of bringing another part of my psyche to work, one that is usually hidden under my admittedly sloppy facade.
I think teaching at NorthLight has enabled me to meet people whom I would never have the good fortune to meet in a mainstream school. Just last year, four educational specialists from the Psychological Services Branch came to observe my lesson. My form class was so restless that I stopped half-way to ask them, “Would you like to dance to ‘Baby Shark’?” And to my horror, these boys really took up my offer and danced in front of the observers without any hint of embarrassment.
Fortunately, these boys didn’t put on any stunt during another lesson observation by ITD personnel. In fact, they told my HOD that they were impressed with how fast my students switched on their laptops and utilised an app called Simpler. I do win some battles!
I think NorthLight has satisfied my curiosity in regard to meeting new people from wacky walks of life.
