I'm biased, and by all evidence probably wrong, but I think we just need to break out of the current fashion of ad-based business models. It's at least not so black and white - ad based or charity.
Most of us would pay for Signal stickers or flare or whatever if it existed and were payable anonymously.

I agree re: ad-based business, but for Signal, if they can get by properly like this, then I think that they shouldn't change anything. I'd much rather donate money to Signal than donate my data to Zuck or Elon.
Re: pay for goodies. I've been giving them some sats every December for a couple of years in a row now, and I'd honestly like to continue giving them a Christmas gift. Without needing to expose my address: I'd really rather they don't have that data; it'd just be another potential future exposure to worry about.

I’m with you. If they’re happy and functional, I wouldn’t change anything either.
I just wanted to reject that social businesses face the explicit dilemma of data-selling vs going non-profit (even if those are the only working examples lol).
