Greetings, peers! This is my first post on the platform. I’m not a programmer, so I’m open to criticism from experienced developers. I will talk about the concept, how it'll compete with YouTube, monetization and some challenges I have realized that will create difficulty for the functioning of the concept, if it gets out of the paper of course.
I would like to discuss the possibility of creating a video dataset-fetching client system (VDFCS), an open-source backend framework capable of fetching videos from databases like LBRY and YouTube. For user interaction features, Nostr would be used for account creation and enable engagement functionalities, such as commenting and liking. This will ensure independence from the original video dataset, where the original video could be censored, but not the creator and consumer accounts. The system would also support the ability to zap creators, commentators and other users.
For the front-end, there can be many applications to access the VDFCS. Just like Bitcoin wallets, they could offer different functionalities, like orienting more for music or streaming, while enabling competition and censorship resistance.
Competing with YouTube
I consider YouTube to be a search engine, because the internet relies on it’s database for many purposes, similar to Google when Brave search doesn’t satisfy a specific search inquiry. So, the VDFCS would bridge to the YouTube dataset, like how Newpipe does. This will ease the transition to the LBRY database for consumers and maybe creators, if somehow a form to link and bridge their Nostr accounts with their YouTube accounts.
Monetization
Creators will have to find their own revenue sources, as the traditional financing model requires an intrusive, unsustainable and fiat ad-economy. After all, creating videos is a business, not a traditional job. Advanced monetization features will be probably covered by the front-end applications themselves or implemented through proposals, like in Nostr (if this is possible of course). They may have to sell products, offer premium content, rely on donations or on sponsors. The paid currency may have to include fiat currencies sadly, as most people still ignorant on the status quo of the legacy system.
Challenges
Besides finding a form to implement Nostr and LBRY together, bridging to YouTube will be main challenge. Updates in it’s API can interfere with fetching, and if this system manages to bother Google, they’ll engage in a war with the VDFCS like how they are doing with ad blockers currently.
My biggest concern however is on the implementation of privacy features, specially with YouTube bridging.
What about you guys, what do you all think? Here's some of the questions I would like to get answered on:
  • How much of the concept is possible to develop?
  • What other challenges exist that I didn’t mention in here?
  • And what other suggestions and improvements you have for the concept of this system to compete with YouTube?
Any direction for this concept will be appreciated, as I would love to see YouTube getting scrapped, but currently I have to use different forms to access it.
