There's some validity to the protectionist ideas though. Especially strategic self reliance and unfair competition from China. Traditional textbooks (Mankiw) would say that we shouldn't care if China is exporting unfairly, because it means cheaper goods for us. But that views the world through a consumerist lens that doesn't view work as an integral part of a person's dignity and view of themselves.
