The following statements were made by historian Agostinho Borromeo.
About the “Infamous and Terrible” Spanish Inquisition
“The Inquisition in Spain issued, between 1540 and 1700, 44,674 trials. The defendants sentenced to death were only 1.8% (804) and, of these, 1.7% (13) were sentenced in “contumacy”, that is, people whose whereabouts are unknown or dead who in their place were burned or hanged.”
About the famous “Witch Hunts”
“Of the 125,000 trials in its history [ecclesiastical courts], the Spanish Inquisition sentenced 59 “witches” to death. In Italy, 36 and in Portugal 4.”

The mere fact that the Church brought 125,000 cases to trial is already an absurdity in itself. People were persecuted, had their rights curtailed, were imprisoned for years—and for stupid reasons. Each person who died in these trials only worsens the stain that was the theocratic state-led Inquisition.

People are the ones who kill people. Bad people are those who have hidden behind institutions, parties, and organizations throughout history, to do evil, to harm others.
