I'd love to have more discussions on here. Perhaps we don't have any super commenters yet but if you're ordinarily very active on other sites, can you put a finger on why you are comment shy here?

I suspect tips might go along way to helping here. A couple of sats from upvotes might not be encouragement enough. I'm just wondering if there's something about commenting incentives that I've misunderstood.

This community is still small with a high signal to noise ratio. It's kind of like the old saying about people being mindful about garbage in cleaner cities and careless in messy cities.

Point being, more comments is not always a good thing. It takes a lot of effort to post something thoughtful. I'd prefer one sincere thoughtful comment to a thousand people parroting some variation of "in Russia, comment writes you". I do miss slashdot tho...

reply

I'm a bit confused about the order of post. I just upvote everything for now to give my encouragement in using the platform.

A small preview of the first one or two lines in the main page would also help in engaging. Titles are often too raw.

If there is a link, maybe showing the image preview would also help (option to toggle it off provided to keep sleek interface).

reply

I explain how posts are ordered/ranked in the faq https://stacker.news/faq

Cool, someone else has suggested the link preview. I'll have to think about how to do that more.

reply

that was mee...tho i think this person explained it much better lol

reply

id post more, but i dont really make any content, so id just be reposting someone ELSEs content and potentially getting sats for someone else's work.
i posted the RHR and just donated 2k sats to them to offset any sats i get.

reply

i wouldn’t feel bad about stealing credit. As a creator the most difficult thing is getting user eyeballs and attention span. Your real competition is Instagram Youtube Tiktok etc. Links to content are almost always appreciated, especially as creators often feel self conscious about spamming forums such as these.

reply

yes this too, i literally do not post too much of my own stuff for this very reason

reply

I wouldn't think of it as getting sats for someone else's work. SN is a link aggregator, so the incentive is to get (relevant) information available in a single place quickly. As content creators start to come on board, they'll naturally be able to post their own content to the site first.

reply

exactly this

reply

This is interesting - you feel like you're kind of receiving credit for their content.

Do you know why you might feel differently sharing someone else's work on Reddit or Twitter (where you get karma/attention)?

reply

i mean we are talking sats here. not some internet points lmao
it would be cool if somehow in the future if stacker.news could someone tap into the podcasting 2.0 stuff going on with sphinx and breez and when say marty and matt drop a podcast the site would pick up the rss and post it and any sats garnered from 'upvotes' on the OG post would go straight to them

if you couldnt tell, i dont know shit about coding, dont even know if its possible.
but with the post before about the rss feed for stacker.news it got me thinking

reply

I get it! Money is sacred.

It sounds like if SN gave you the option to post but send the upvotes/sats to the content creator, you'd feel better about that.

reply

yeah for sure

reply

idk, can't speak for those guys but i wouldn't care if i had ads in my podcast like them

reply

It's all in the incentives.

Right now every action costs sats.
Maybe you can tweak that a little bit.

-1 sats for commenting (but the first 10 of the day/everyday are free)
-1 sats for upvoting
-2 sats for downvoting
-1 sats for a post
-5 sats for a post with free discussion (upfronted by the OP).

Maybe even the OP of the link/post/article can designate a new post as open for free discussion (the cost is upfronted by the OP).

reply

thats actually really smart idea.

reply
reply

I like the OP dictating the economics a lot!

Thanks for the opinion on the incentives too. It’s helpful to know they might be altering behavior in a way I don’t want right now.

reply

I prefer to lurk.

reply

i respect that

reply

Imho more comments will come with more people checking out Stacker News and you will have the opposite issue and will have to think hard about how to handle those :D

I wouldn't worry too much with 150DAU...

reply

I agree with this. The majority of people simply want to lurk, and in the case of SN, might not even set up a wallet for upvoting posts and comments. As the site naturally grows, so will engagement.

reply

Good point. Focusing on user growth will certainly solve the problem.

I just want to make sure there isn’t something anyone can put their finger on that’s inhibiting them.

reply

I've always been a browser on reddit, and a sometimes poster on twitter. But seeing this comment made me want to comment...

reply

i think op implied stir the shit up

reply

Maybe topics? i.e. I am very interested in the cross section of agriculture and bitcoin. I would be more incentivized to comment if I knew the discussion was focused mainly around a single topic.

reply

Awesome idea.

You feel like the topics of most posts aren't very relevant to your interests, or you just feel more comfortable when the topic is explicit?

reply

More confident when the topic is explicit. I am fascinated about all the topics, especially the new lightning tech. LNURL, static invoices etc. But boy am I out of my depth.

However, maybe i should just engage more and ask questions.

reply

I also have a wild thought. Do you reckon you could ever sell the code and associated operating manual for those wanting to operate their own versions of stacker news?

i.e. if I wanted to create a ruralaus.news page?

reply

That is a pretty wild thought. What would you pay for that to put a number on it?

Would such a thing have value if I made a subreddit like feature?

reply

Yes! Carrots for sats!

reply

I don't know much about crypto so I mostly lurk :)

As the site grows (which it will) and I learn more, it will be easier for me to comment.

reply

Thanks for coming out of the lurk (briefly)!

reply

Will happen organically. The site is awesome <3

reply

i honestly think it's time for profile pictures.

reply

For sure! I have some cute ideas for this.

I want bios too. Make everyone feel like they have a whole identity on the site psuedo or not.

reply

How are we doing on comment volume now?
