The other thing is most people seem more interested in confirmation of their existing position vs understanding alternatives.
So my guess is they consume news that aligns with this.
It's a step further than just confirmation of factual correctness. People love the narrative that it's just bad people who disagree with them.
The Team Good vs Team Bad outlook is a lot easier to get across if you misrepresent and strawman the opposing view.
