“India is the highest — one of the highest tariff nations in the world. It’s very hard to sell into India, and they’ve offered us a deal where, basically, they’re willing to literally charge us no tariff,” Trump said during a roundtable with business leaders in Doha, Qatar.
So a zero tariff — if that’s in fact what India is offering — would be a welcome change for US companies looking to export their goods to the world’s most populous country.

I do believe it's gonna happen. India is only the 10th larget partner of US but has the highest population. I've heard (recently) about Modi's ambition of making India the biggest partner of US.
India has quietly shifted away from "Make In India" and that's a big indicator.
Although I'm not very optimistic about spendthrift Indians would be preferring more expensive US products over made in India cheaper ones.

From probably outdated things I’ve read, some of India’s domestic products are actually more expensive because of the way less efficient production processes have been regulated.
India really shouldn’t ever be America’s largest trade partner, just because of how far away it is. That would mean something’s really screwed up in our trade relations with China and Mexico.

I want to correct you on distances. While shipping to US from China has less distance only to the western coast of USA. When shipping to Eastern coast it's India that has less distance. And If 0% tarrifs from both sides are applied, I don't think the eastern side of US would really want to put extra interstate transportation costs for larger demographics living in the eastern side of US.

I think the bulk of our trade with China does come through the West Coast, though, and the Panama Canal makes it closer anyway. Plus, there will be more usage of Arctic Ocean routes in the summer, which also makes China closer to the North Eastern states.
The EU should be a larger trading partner to the East than India, too.

Do you mean it makes US Eastern Coast closer to China than India? Actually it doesn't. Via Suez Canal every Eastern Port is 7500 too 9500 miles from India while only the southern cost of USA is more than 9500 in the eastern side.

That's ok. I'm in the logistic business, so I know it. Otherwise most people think that China has a distance advantage over India to trade with US.
New york is much closer to India than from China also because China has to rotate either the whole of Southern Asia or the whole of Southern NA.
