I've only ever used Audible for audiobooks, and hadn't considered self-hosting them. I'm not much of an audiophile anyway.

Audio Bookshelf is great. Been using it for a few years now. I'm still a user of Audible but I download and remove the DRM from my audiobooks and selfhost this great project.
Many audiobooks are available for free as well so this is the one home for all of my audio books. Their Android app is solid. I don't think they are in the Apple app store but you can get access to their test iOS app for free.

Forgot to link to OpenAudible. Its not free but isn't expensive either.
