It's a really interesting method, but it's quite laborious and that's why most people won't use it.
I think the best way to understand a book or to make it stick in your mind is to reread it. With each reread, you feel like you are reading a different book.
The best way to imprint something on your mind is through repetition. I think it is more practical to apply the method I mentioned. Of course, this is just my opinion. Everyone can think differently.

I remember when I was about 16, I had my appendix removed and was on bed rest for a month.
Looking to occupy my mind, I started reading "The House of the Spirits" by Isabel Allende. That novel was wonderful, and when I finished it, almost subconsciously, I started reading it again!
It's certainly been years, but I still remember most of that excellent story!
