Before launching Bitcoin on 8 Jan 2009 Satoshi had an early version coded.
This is known as the November 2008 Version.
Here are the 10 changes he made to what became Bitcoin as we know it today.
Satoshi decided not to start mining until no other peers were on the network.
This shows the 1st block was NOT pre-mined.
Also, a measure to avoid hard-forks in the 1st few blocks.
The initial block time was 15 minutes, not 10.
The difficulty adjustment period was changed from 30 days to 14 days.
2,880 blocks vs 2,016 blocks
A shorter adjustment period makes the network more responsive to changes in hash rate.
Today 1 Bitcoin = 100 million sats.
Before, it was 1 million UNITS. (ofc he did not call them Satoshis)
Increasing the number allows for a finer granularity.
The halving period was changed from 100k Blocks to 210K blocks.
Block reward was changed from 100 UNITS to 50 COINs
100k block halving - 1,041 days 210k block halving - 1458 days
In the 2008 version Satoshi had a different genesis block dated 10 September 2008.
It did not contain the famous message and it had a 100 COIN reward in the coinbase as opposed to the 50 BTC one.
Perhaps the most famous one is calling the Blockchain a Timechain.
A miner can NOT spend the fresh coins. He has to wait 100 blocks.
This diminishes their power and what attacks they can launch on the network.
This was not the case in the 2008 version.
Since the 2008 version was only tested by Satoshi, the proof of work requirement was very small.
It was later changed to require some non-trivial effort to mine a block.
Since Satoshi was probably the only person testing the software, the fees were set to 10,000 UNITS
In the 2009 version fees were changed to be configurable by the user.
