I don't like read receipts and I disable them in every messenger. I recently discovered that Signal also had read receipts. I immediately went into the settings to disable them, just as I apparently already did for typing indicators at some point.
I think they only make communication over text worse since either they don't matter because both don't care about it, or one person is upset that you left them on read for too long.
Is there anything positive about read receipts?
Here are two articles that I haven't read yet:
What do you think?

Can't for the life of me find the report anymore... but there was an allegation around 2020 or 2021 that said read receipts (and moji responses) were used by intelligence agencies to identify active e2e encrypted conversations using their dragnets - recognizable due to their constant size.

If you were to find that relationship again, I would be very curious to read it.

Mine are active for the simple fact that I don't care, just as everyone I know knows that I rarely read a message right away if it's not urgent to me. I use the message previews in the notifications a lot to know if I should read it and the pending message markings (those with the number on the app) to know what I've already read and resolved. In some messengers I don't like the "mark as unread" feature; I prefer to read the summary in the notification and actually open the message, marking it as read, when I actually "resolve" it.
I'll read the posts mentioned.

Seeing that someone ignored your text sucks. Living in a state of abject uncertainty is way worse.
The whole article is overly dramatic by someone who didn't like being ignored.
The second one provides more concise information.
It's really bad that people read your message and don't respond. But there are many people who do the same as me, they just don't let the sender know that it was read.
reply
I ask you for a basic culture of mine, in which app is it possible to mark a message with unread?
reply
I believe that this is possible in all messengers. It is worth noting that when you mark an email as unread, you mark it only for yourself, the other person still sees the message as read.

Maybe with the term messengers we are not referring to the same thing., because I am referring to apps such as Telegram, WhatsApp, SimpleX, WeChat and similar. In these apps I find no possibility to mark a message as unread.

As for emails, as I wrote in my reply to the OP, by default I disable the read receipt on Thunderbird, so this is NEVER sent. The sender, therefore, has no way of knowing if and when I read his email.

All the ones you mentioned have the option to mark as unread.

Now I speak exclusively about telegram, because I have had neither time nor desire to try the others.
You are right. There is a function named mark as unread, but the terms is just wrong.
A real mark as unread, under telegram must to the action listed at follow:
  • ask how many message to mark as unread
  • remove the 2nd tick from these last messages
  • put back the dot with the number of message to be read in the same colors of the other.
The telegram function does none of this. Simply put a numberless dot of a different color. Let's say as a reminder pure and simple.
I repeat that in Telegram (at least in the fork that I use), it can read messages as a preview without ever being marked read. If you want, I'll give you my Telegram contact and show you.

I was not aware of it, I will look for more information on this news.

First of all, I would like to point out that the article only talks about emails read from the smartphone, then I suggest you give a read to this nwes.
I was already using this system twenty years ago. An image hosted on my site that stored all the IPs that displayed it.
For this reason, both the Thunderbird that I use on my computer and the email client that I use on my android phone, do not load images by default, but only if I authorize them.
At least, this is the information in my possession, in case it is wrong, I will try to inquire about it.

I'll put it this way:
if there is every a digital bill of rights, the right to turn off read receipts and the right to "appear offline" anywhere should be in there
reply
I turn them off. I don’t like offering that information to people.
I do have friends that leave them on because they like people to know when they’re ignoring them lol
reply
Always on for all apps !

I hate them and turn them off on anything I use.

I like them. I know most of the people I talk to and its useful to know if they have seen it
reply
I used to turn them off, as i had a boss who loved to micromanage and would expect answers at any time of the day and week. However, I've actively started changing my dynamic with him, setting my boundaries, and I'm comfortable now him to see if I saw his message yet i did not answer yet.
As for social interactions, in Korea, it is not acceptable to see a message and not answer right away. But it is accepted to keep it as unread even when every knows you've already read it in stealth mode.

I personally don't but respect who disables them. It's just that IM for me has to be irl-like, if I don't want that I would use emails; also don't really care if I'm left on read, there's always a reason behind it.
reply
I disable it in emails, in messaging messages, however, I adjust it as I need.
I don't have WhatsApp, the program I use the most is Telegram. In Telegram, only acquaintances can see my status and read notification. But in Telegram, I can preview the message without reading it.
Consider then, that every now and then, I tell the app to mark all the chats read, so, I don't care how all this is considered by the interviewers.
reply
Yes definitely

I feel conflicted about it. Its nice to know when someone reads your mesaage, but it can also be annoying if they dont answer back?
reply
Always

"Person is typing" can be useful so that we don't talk at the same time or over each other
But read receipts imo has much less positives if any
reply
It depends on personal choices. Different persons have different reasons for keeping them on.
