I have been spending a lot of time with her outside, trying to make it obvious what she’s supposed to be doing out there, and she’s finally starting to come get my attention when she needs out. 

We strongly suspect her previous home had her trained to go on pads inside, even though they said she was mostly housebroken. So, we have to work against her basically seeing the carpets and rugs as toilets.

The last 7 steps probably weren't worth it

I'm a pet "accident" nazi. I don't believe anyone, man or beast, accidentally pisses on my floor. I don't obsessively train my dogs EXCEPT for housebreaking. That means crate training and lots of walks. Still, I bet you get in more steps than me with a young child.
