Not only can I be my own bank and run a my own lightning bank. I can have private communications with people anywhere on the planet that only the two of us can read. On top of that I can manufacturer items in my office with this very affordable 3d printer.
Just a thought as I'm printing some items for a party we have coming up. I'm watching the print complete from my phone while I work on the back porch.
We live in an amazing time. It is easy to forget this when we are focused on the stupidity we see online.
What are you printing?
I've been thinking of getting a 3D printer. What would you say are the most valuable uses for it?
reply
Ha, keycaps. Like the keyboard caps for keyboards. They are for table decor.

Varies depending on your interests and hobbies. Because I'm a software dev and self host a lot of stuff I have printed many things for my home lab server cabinets. Raspberry Pi stuff and cases for DIY IoT projects.
I've printing things like.
  • Desk organization stuff
  • A retractable headphone hanger
  • A guitar stomp box remote switch enclosure
  • Laptop holders
  • Custom designed things to fix random stuff around the house
  • Cases for various bitcoin hardware devices
I'm getting into stronger filaments for more tough uses around tools. I'm on an organization sprint to get my tool boxes in order.
I have a friend that runs an ISP and MSP and he's been getting all his team's tools better organized and printing custom enclosures for some of their equipment. He's also been making custom coasters for local businesses.
And of course, I've printed many additions to my printer to improve it. Things like a camera mount. 3dprinting is a hobby but the stuff from Creality and Bambu Labs are very easy for noobs.
Oh, one more thing. I have a buddy that flips used musical gear and I've printed replacement parts for him several times. Also created an emblem for one of his speaker cabs with his girls names in the style of Marshall.

Desk organization stuff
Be careful exploring Gridfinity. Its sort like a mind-worm....sorta becomes the solution to every problem. You will soon start trying to organize your wife's spice cabinet with gridfinity storage bins.

Custom organizers sounds like a great use case for 3D printing. it's pretty hard to find stuff that suits your needs just right at the store.
reply
Yes, I think thats the "mind worm" aspect of projects like Gridfinity. It provides a common format to create stackable organizers.
You print a "grid base" and then then anything else you print will automatically "stack" into that common base.
So, as you say, you print custom containers for exactly the space you need.

This probably pushed the needle for me in getting a 3D printer from "curious" to "a matter of time"
Yeah... I'm in that rat hole now. But only my office :)

Reading "The Rational Optimist" by Matt Ridley really changed my perspective on this.

That's true. I agree with all this.
We indeed live in amazing times.
I do like the "magic" of sending digital files to a website and a few days later receiving the physical thing in your mail. I know there's a 3rd party involved, but it's quite nice.

Your post captures just how empowering today’s technology can be. With the Bitcoin Lightning Network, you truly can be your own bank—sending and receiving payments instantly, privately, and with minimal fees, thanks to off-chain payment channels that don’t require every transaction to be recorded on the blockchain. This setup not only boosts privacy but also scalability, making Bitcoin practical for everyday use and microtransactions. Add in encrypted messaging apps and affordable 3D printing, and you have a toolkit for global, private communication and independent manufacturing—all from your home or even your phone. It’s easy to overlook how revolutionary this is when daily online noise distracts us, but moments like this remind us just how much potential the present holds.
