ICANN is a group that manages domain names on the Internet. People say it is not part of any government and works on its own. But in the past, it had close ties with the U.S. government. So, some people wonder if it is truly neutral. If a trade war happens, can ICANN be used to punish other countries, like blocking their domain names? In theory, it should not happen. But in real life, there is still a chance it could be used as a tool, because the Internet is now an important part of global power.
I was talking to some people from the ICANN board and ISOC in person at a conference last month. They generally invite everyone to get involved and work with them. I think that the best way to find out what's what is to actually go there? The next big meeting is in Prague, June 9-12 2025 and registrations are open.
