IMO this article is confusing cause and effect. Black Mirror exists because the tech developments of the last 20 years are seen as social negatives. It's hard to disagree. Our top tech talent has been engaged in the zero-sum game of the war for attention, of which each person only has a maximum of 24 hours to give. There is no expansion of the possibility space, only competition for a fixed resource that doesn't seem to further the goals of mankind (by any religion or value system's definition.)
I agree, and also think it’s odd that they would expect a balanced (“Prometheus style”) view of tech, given that this critique is the basic premise of the show.
That said, I agree with the main thesis of the article: this is pessimism porn (great and accurate term), and that is bad. We can have a good critique of everything that’s happening without turning it into entertainment and just bathing in misery. Personally, I saw one episode, thought everything in it was already happening here and now, and determined that I can have my eyes open about this stuff without regularly injecting an artistic representation of it in my brain.
