No one wants another adapter so it supports a USB-C type adapter, much like Thunderbolt, but with more bandwidth and greater power delivery. The dream seems to be being able to daisy chain all of our devices together for power/data in a single cable. I use thunderbolt to power my laptop through my monitor and it's a huge quality of life improvement.
