Recently I spent some time in Guatemala.
Beyond the amazing people and nature I experienced, it was a pleasant surprise to see so much bitcoin action taking place all throughout the country. I suppose it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise given that the country neighbors El Salvador...
No amount of data online can speak to the reality of bitcoin adoption like seeing it firsthand. It's evidence like this that intensely bolsters my confidence in the bitcoin thesis; evidence that suits entrenched in Tradfi will simply never see or give credit to, until their valet driver is asking for bitcoin too.
It's interesting to note that, contrary to the reality that skeptics and naysayers like to present, bitcoin is not destined for the wealthy few. In my life I've found there to be a negative correlation between affluence and bitcoin presence: the wealthier a place is, the less I see bitcoin.
It's particularly obvious comparing bitcoin presence in Central America to North America. In the US I long to stumble across just one business that openly promotes and accepts bitcoin. In Guatemala, it was hard not to notice businesses welcoming it. Within Guatemala alone, too, I noticed much greater bitcoin presence in the outskirts than I did in the country's bustling cultural hub, Antigua. Though it was still there, it served as a small domestic example that speaks to the greater discrepancy I see internationally.
Talking to locals there only solidifies the trend I'm seeing. On multiple accounts, I was told that basically everyone accepts bitcoin there, whether they have a sign for it or not. The country is very warm towards bitcoin, in stark contrast to the US, where having it all usually breeds pride and coldness towards anything that dares to challenge a lifetime's worth of coddled worldview...sad!
I absolutely have to get back to Central America. El Salvador is obviously high on my list, but I would love to hear recommendations of where else to go, and how you've experience bitcoin while there!
