Former Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte recently joined the notorious group of world leaders indicted by the ICC. Arrested on March 11, 2025, Rodrigo Duterte was charged with the crime against humanity of murder for his alleged role in the Davao Death Squad and extrajudicial killings in the Philippines between 2011 and 2019. The squad, a vigilante group in Davao City, is accused of executing street children, petty crime suspects, and drug dealers.
Other notable world leaders who have also been indicted by the ICC include Russia's Vladimir Putin and Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu. Both Putin and Netanyahu's arrest warrants are still active, as of March 2025.
The 124 states that are parties to the Rome Statute, which established the ICC, are legally obligated to arrest and surrender individuals sought by the ICC if they are present on their territory.
U.S. President Donald Trump recently announced sanctions against the ICC, which he accuses of "illegitimate and baseless actions targeting America and our close ally Israel."
The ICC has requested an arrest warrant for Min Aung Hlaing, which is still pending as of March 27, 2025
