Education Secretary Linda McMahon confirmed that staff cuts reducing the DOE from 4,133 to 2,183 are the "first step" to shutting it down, per Trump’s mandate. The goal: eliminate bloat and return education to the states. Congress must approve, needing 60 Senate votes, a tall order with the GOP’s 53-47 edge. More to come as this unfolds.
I guess it's a good move. Take a look at the depiction of how he did it.
"It sounds strange, doesn’t it? Department of Education. We’re going to eliminate it," Trump said while speaking in the East Room of the White House at a ceremony where he was flanked by children seated at school desks. Before signing the order, Trump turned to the children and asked, “Should I do this?”
I’m indifferent about this. I’m confused as to why it’s such a partisan issue. On surface level if I am in state government I would be thrilled. More power to control education in my state. The better the state supports it the more people they will attract
It's because they only see the immediate funding they might be losing, and don't think how that funding could be used on better purposes
This is part of the problem, people only look at their budget, their immediate funding and nothing else
It’s all about the loss of immediate funding
I can see why living in NY you might not see what the advantage is. Although, even there, it won't just be the state getting more power. Your local school district will have more ability to adopt the policies they want without fear of losing federal funding.
They aren't happy because Education is a responsibility and if they will fail to perform, it's a big deal. I mean Education is very popular agenda for the political outcomes. Isn't it?
And the kids replied, what is the DoE?
Is it the most controversial and most unpopular EO of Trump 2.0 so far?
I guess it's a good move. I've looked at the numbers. It’s insane this was allowed to happen.
Unpopular and imo one of the most consequential moves long term, gutting a powerful and bloated instrument of propaganda that has failed over and over.
Which is also why I don't expect it to happen. Government schools are too important to the machine.
Fighting this will also be easy. They're gonna frame it like "He wants to abolish educate itself!" "He doesn't want an educated population because that foils his evil fascist plans!"
