And the GOP  of the 80s TALKED to the Soviets. They negotiated. Governments and politicians are evil. The US lied, broke promises made. The Russian government has been guilty of terrible crimes. There are pro-Putin people but just because someone is pushing to end the war doesn't mean they are a mindless bot of Putin. That's a really lazy take. Don't defend Putin for sure, but don't pretend the US government. That same one that invaded Iraq under lies is trustworthy.
