The FBI was able to identify Hushpuppi and Woodberry (co-conspirator) due to their bitcoin transactions.
“Records obtained from Bitpay, a processor of cryptocurrency transactions, indicated that between approximately September 18, 2015 and November 29, 2016, the 16AtGJ BTC wallet made five purchases associated with the Gmail account hustleandbustle@gmail[.]com (the “hustle Gmail account”).

Earlier this year, the FBI gained access (i.e., "recovered") ~150 BTC (of the 1,500 BTC that it is believed were at one time or another acquired by Woodberry).
“Preliminary blockchain analysis indicates that PONLE received at least 1,494.71506296 bitcoin related to these BEC schemes, valued at approximately $6,599,499.98 at the time he received the proceeds,” the document added.
