3D tomography of a 70-year-old woman who has been carrying her calcified child in her womb for over 30 years. This happens in certain cases when the fetus dies during pregnancy and the mother does not seek medical help. It is known as lithopedion, from the Greek litho = stone; pedion = child, or literally “stone baby”. In these cases, the body creates calcification to avoid suffering from fetal necrosis.
I wonder why they chose greek for the name of this condition...
