it's disdain for Trump >>> tariffs

all of a sudden everyone is a trade expert, a free trader, a GAAT/WTO expert

Not sure about that. There seemed to be less hysteria over Trump getting elected than during his last administration. I think there were populist elements of Canada that were very happy Trump won but US is Canada's largest trading partner so most Canadians see tariffs as an economic attack on Canada.

reply

since USA is Canada's largest trading partner shouldn't Canada remove all barriers to trade with USA?

serious question

reply

I wouldn't say all but broadly yes Canadian markets should be more open to US producers/companies.

I do think it is perfectly reasonable for any and all nations to protect and preserve critical domestic industries (whatever that may be deemed to be, food production, energy, minerals, medical supplies, building materials). It's not always a good strategy to rely on the kindness of strangers in crisis.

I am not against the US putting tariffs on imports of what they deem to be critical for American stability and security.

The reality is when you agree to something and then try to take it away there will be anger and push back. I am not making a case for or against the tariffs, I am just telling you how it is being interpreted in Canada and that it shouldn't just be brushed off as Canadians just hate Trump.

reply

which industries are critical in Canada?

I don't think it's dairy since 80 percent of Canada is vegan...

reply

4.6% of Canada is vegan, while 4% of US is.

reply

Is Trump right that there is 239 percent tariff on American dairy in Canada?

reply

Yes there is lol on milk and cheese to "protect" farms in Canada

reply

That is not accurate. There is a 239% tariff... after a certain amount of American imports to Canada. It is not overall it 'triggers' only under certain conditions.

It is also as I understand it a result of the USMCA negotiated under Mr Trump's first term?

reply

So due to the supply management system that Canada has the US dairy industry really is not able to break in and the data backs it up. The tariff has been in place for decades with the USMCA the quotas were supposed to be increased to allow for US competition but that has not happened due to how harsh the tariff is.

Really the "certain conditions" along with the supply management system Canada uses makes it to costly for the US to break into the market because it cant establish a supply chain into it that is stable.

Canada pulled a fast one with this

reply

I thought most Canadians were fags... I mean vegans
