Ercot said it’s gotten requests equal to 99 gigawatts for new connections to the grid from big power users, including data centers, bitcoin miners and hydrogen producers, according to an internal grid presentation Thursday. That’s up from 40.8 gigawatts last March.

“There can’t be anymore demand than there is supply,” said Beth Garza, a senior fellow at think tank R Street Institute.
Hah! That's some real 1-dimensional thinking right there. May need a rethink tank to mansplain what happens when demand > supply.
There’s a big question as to whether infrastructure can be built fast enough because of supply chain issues, resulting in long wait times for things like big turbines to produce electricity
Is there an actual intent to build more nuclear in TX yet? I haven't heard anything after the advanced nuclear report from the governor's working group - did I miss something?
other key equipment such as transformers
Don't underestimate this little mention. I've seen transformer shortages (and power line rating issues) wreak havoc on businesses in Western Europe the past 2-3 years because the backlog will keep on growing unless relocation happens. Relocation (the thing that happens when demand > supply) is the worst solution especially when essential heavy industry moves out. And no, I wasn't even referring to Germany - whole other league of shitshow there.

For comparison, this is about 10% of what you'd need to green the deserts of the southwest by pumping water all the way from the great lakes

The article frames Texas’ projected energy demand as a fixed need, but much of it comes from flexible consumers like Bitcoin miners, who primarily operate when power is cheap. I'm convinced that the same request has been sent to other areas.

I wonder if they will actually do it? Those are just requests, they actually havent build the data centers yet that need that kind of power. Who knows if the data centers will even build in texas? You would think they would build closer to a functioning nuclear plant.

Gawd damn almost triple the power needed from before. Think it's most of the new power needed is for the miners?

It's all in the article.
