I recently learned about the hypothesis that mammals emerged as the dominant species on Earth, instead of reptiles repopulating, because the cold dark post asteroid conditions allowed rampant fungal growth.
Mammals and birds are much less susceptible to fungal infections than reptiles, because our warm bodies are inhospitable to fungi. That may have been the selective edge that elevated mammals over reptiles.
